In a notable shift within its energy landscape, Bulgaria has reported an increase in both electricity production and consumption for the year 2026. Data from the Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator, ESO, indicates that electricity generation from January 1 to May 17 rose by 2.22%, culminating in a total output of 17 TWh. This growth reflects a steady recovery in the sector as demand rebounds.

Electricity consumption mirrored this upward trend, with a significant rise of 7.18%, reaching 16.78 TWh during the same timeframe. The heightened domestic demand has led to Bulgaria registering net electricity imports of 215 GWh, highlighting the balancing act between local supply and consumption needs.

Despite the overall increase in production, baseload power plants—including coal-fired and nuclear facilities—experienced a downturn, generating a total of 11.58 TWh, which is a decline of 10.6% compared to 2025. This reduction underscores ongoing challenges within traditional energy sectors as they adapt to changing market dynamics and regulatory pressures.

Conversely, renewable energy sources (RES) have shown resilience and growth. Generation from RES connected to the transmission network surged by 11.37%, achieving 1,408.7 GWh. Additionally, renewable electricity production within Bulgaria’s distribution network increased by 3.12%, totaling 1,385.5 GWh. This shift towards renewables is indicative of Bulgaria’s efforts to diversify its energy mix and enhance sustainability in response to both domestic and international energy policies.

The contrasting trends between traditional baseload generation and renewable energy growth signal a pivotal moment for Bulgaria’s energy sector as it navigates the complexities of transitioning to a more sustainable framework while meeting rising electricity demands.
