Unit 5 of Bulgaria’s sole nuclear power plant Kozloduy will be shut down for regular annual maintenance. The overhaul, which includes replenishing nuclear fuel and testing of the plant’s systems and equipment, is expected to be completed by the end of May, when the unit will be put back online. In the meantime, unit 6 is operating at full capacity.
NPP Kozloduy produced a total of 4,538 GWh of electricity in the first quarter of the year. Originally, NPP Kozloduy had six reactors, but four older 440 MW reactors were shut down in 2007 due to nuclear safety concern of the European Union. The plant currently operates two Soviet-built 1,000 MW reactors, unit 5 and unit 6 which were commissioned in 1987 and 1991 respectively.
