Unit 6 of NPP Kozloduy will be offline for regular maintenance. Bulgaria’s sole nuclear power plant Kozloduy will shut down its 1,000 MW unit 6 for regular annual maintenance on 22 September.
The overhaul, which includes replenishing nuclear fuel and testing of the plant’s systems and equipment, is expected to be completed by the end of October, when the unit will be put back online. In the meantime, unit 5 is operating at full capacity. Originally, NPP Kozloduy had six reactors, but four older 440 MW reactors were shut down in 2007 due to nuclear safety concern of the European Union. The plant currently operates two Soviet-built 1,000 MW reactors, unit 5 and unit 6 which were commissioned in 1987 and 1991 respectively.
