Bulgaria: IBEX launches guarantees of origin market to promote liberalized electricity trading

The Independent Bulgarian Electricity Exchange (IBEX) has launched a new guarantees of origin market as part of its initiative to further liberalize Bulgaria’s electricity market. The market will be managed in partnership with Bulgaria’s Sustainable Energy Development Agency (SEDA).

Trading will take place through an electronic platform, where participants can engage in purchase and sale auctions, with the necessary collateral. The new platform will facilitate the trading of guarantees of origin issued by SEDA for monthly, quarterly, and semi-annual periods. Registration opened on 31 March for companies listed in the SEDA register and those registered under the Value Added Tax Act.

In line with the EU’s renewable energy directive, guarantees of origin serve as certificates proving that a specific portion or volume of electricity has been generated from renewable sources. These certificates can also be issued for non-renewable energy. Each guarantee represents 1 MWh of electricity.
