In December 2025, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) reported a total gross electricity production of 736 GWh, reflecting a 4.8% decline from the 773 GWh produced in December 2024. The generation landscape was predominantly shaped by thermal power plants, which contributed 49.9% of the total output, while hydropower plants accounted for 44.1%, and wind energy sources provided 6%.
The net electricity production for the month stood at 693 GWh. Breaking it down further, hydropower plants generated 322 GWh, thermal power plants produced 327 GWh, and wind farms contributed 44 GWh. This distribution indicates a relatively balanced reliance on both hydro and thermal energy sources during this period.
In terms of trade dynamics, the FBiH experienced a notable reduction in electricity imports, which fell to 87 GWh, down from 176 GWh in December 2024. Exports also saw a decline, dropping to 76 GWh compared to the previous year’s figure of 155 GWh. These trends suggest a significant contraction in cross-border electricity flows, indicative of diminished market activity.
The coal production sector exhibited contrasting trends in December. The output of brown coal decreased significantly to 259,820 tons, representing a 31.4% drop from the previous year’s figure of 378,899 tons. Conversely, lignite production rose by 12.8% year-on-year, reaching 132,099 tons, up from 117,084 tons.
Coke production faced challenges as well, with total output falling sharply to 21,441 tons in December 2025. This marked a substantial 46.7% reduction compared to the 40,225 tons produced in December 2024, highlighting ongoing pressures within the industrial fuels segment.
