Romanian electricity transmission system operator Transelectrica has officially started the construction of the 400 kV Constanta Nord–Medgidia Sud overhead transmission line, a crucial project aimed at reinforcing the country’s transmission network and enhancing energy security for both consumers and producers in the Dobrogea region.
This initiative is the first in Romania to receive approval for non-reimbursable financing from the European Modernization Fund, with a total allocation of 22.4 million euros. The construction contract, valued at 26.8 million euros, has been awarded to the Electromontaj – Elm Electromontaj Cluj consortium, with the project expected to be completed within 30 months.
Stefanita Munteanu, President of Transelectrica’s Directorate, emphasized that the Modernization Fund plays a pivotal role in supporting the development of Romania’s strategic energy infrastructure. He assured that Transelectrica is committed to executing these projects responsibly, ensuring compliance with all standards and deadlines.
The 400 kV Constanta Nord–Medgidia Sud transmission line will address existing network congestion in Dobrogea and enable the integration of new renewable energy plants in the region. This project, alongside other key initiatives such as the Cernavoda–Stalpu and Gutinas–Smardan lines, will significantly increase the capacity to transport renewable energy from the area.
According to the project’s feasibility study, the new high-voltage line will facilitate the transmission of at least 273 MW of additional electricity from renewable sources in Dobrogea, a region with considerable energy production. This will not only enhance energy evacuation efficiency but also contribute to the stability and balance of Romania’s national grid.
Transelectrica’s Electricity Transmission Network Development Plan for 2024–2033 outlines investments totaling approximately 1.9 billion euros, focusing on improving supply security, boosting interconnection capacity, and supporting Romania’s transition to renewable energy by integrating more green energy and connecting new power plants.
