In just four years, the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) has successfully delivered 40 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas to Europe, marking a significant achievement for the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC) and highlighting the importance of diversified energy routes. TAP AG, the pipeline’s operator, announced this milestone on its X account, underscoring TAP’s critical role in bolstering Europe’s energy security during a pivotal time for the continent.
“This milestone reflects the dedication of our teams in Greece, Italy, Albania, and Switzerland. We are on track to add an additional 1.2 bcm per year by 2026 to further support Europe’s energy security and sustainability,” the company stated.
Originating from Azerbaijan’s Shah Deniz II field, TAP is the final segment of the SGC, connecting with the Trans Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP) at the Greek-Turkish border. The pipeline stretches through Greece and Albania before crossing the Adriatic Sea to southern Italy. Beyond simply delivering gas, TAP has emerged as a geopolitical asset, enhancing Azerbaijan’s position within the Middle Corridor—a crucial trade and energy route linking Europe and Asia.
As Europe seeks to reduce its dependency on Russian energy, TAP’s significance grows. The Southern Gas Corridor, with TAP as its endpoint, serves as a vital alternative that diversifies energy sources and mitigates Russia’s influence over European gas markets. This strategic shift has solidified Azerbaijan’s role as a key geopolitical player and a trusted energy partner.
TAP is not only maintaining its operational success but is also set for substantial expansion, with plans to increase capacity by 1.2 bcm per year by 2026. This expansion is essential to meet the rising demand in Europe and to facilitate the continent’s transition to cleaner energy.
In the coming years, TAP is poised to enhance regional stability and sustainability efforts, reinforcing the strategic importance of Azerbaijan’s energy exports in an increasingly multipolar world.
