A floating solar power plant is set to be installed on Lake Druzmir (also known as Lake Sostanj), located between the towns of Sostanj and Velenje. The plant will cover up to half of the lake’s surface, with a total installed capacity of up to 140 MW.
The project, initiated by the Ministry of Environment, Climate, and Energy, alongside the Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning, is currently in the planning phase. A proposal for a national spatial plan for the floating solar power plant has been drafted by a dedicated project team. The plan includes the construction of the floating solar facility, as well as necessary infrastructure such as access routes, power cables, a distribution substation, and safety measures for lake users. Environmental conservation efforts will also be integrated, in line with the requirements of the environmental impact report.
The electricity generated by the plant is expected to power approximately 35,000 households annually. The plant will be located between 150 and 200 meters from the shore on the western side of the lake and up to 400 meters on the southwestern side. This development is a major milestone for the city of Sostanj.
The floating solar power plant will be designed with careful consideration of the lake’s ecological and chemical integrity, ensuring the protection of fish, birds, and other wildlife. The project is being led by the state-owned energy company HSE, with a comprehensive environmental impact assessment to be conducted as part of the spatial planning process.
