A new solar power plant with a capacity of 466 kW has officially started generating electricity at the Brestanica gas-fired power plant, marking a significant milestone in expanding renewable energy at the state-owned facility in the municipality of Krsko.

The photovoltaic system was installed by GEN-I Sonce, a subsidiary of the energy company GEN-I. The newly operational plant features 810 ground-mounted solar modules and is the fourth solar energy project developed at the Brestanica site. It benefits from financial support through a national grant scheme promoting renewable energy, which covered 20% of the nearly 600,000-euro total investment.

Previously, the site hosted three other solar installations: two rooftop arrays and a solar canopy over a parking area, commissioned between 2009 and 2010, with a combined peak capacity of 170 kW. The latest addition, which began trial operations in February, significantly increases the facility’s solar generation capacity.

The new plant is expected to produce enough electricity annually to power over one hundred average Slovenian households. A notable share of the budget was invested in integrating a transformer, enhancing the connection capacity for renewable energy sources within the local electricity grid.
