Slovenia’s Ministry for Cohesion and Regional Development has awarded over 4 million euros from the Just Transition Fund to HSE for the expansion of its Prapretno solar power plant, specifically phases 2 and 3. Once fully completed, the site’s total capacity will reach 10 MW.
HSE has increasingly focused its investments on renewable energy, with solar projects taking a central role. The original Prapretno installation, with just over 3 MW of capacity, was the first solar power plant in Slovenia to exceed 1 MW and remains one of the largest in the country. Located on a reclaimed ash and slag landfill near Trbovlje, the site repurposes land previously used for thermal power plant waste disposal.
With sufficient space for expansion, HSE has obtained final building permits for the next two phases of the project. The total investment for Prapretno 2 and 3 is estimated at 13.6 million euros, with the Just Transition Fund contributing approximately 4 million euros. Currently, the solar park features 6,746 panels spread across 34,000 square meters. After all development stages are complete, the plant will host nearly 19,000 panels and reach a capacity of 10 MW. A new 7 MW/14 MWh battery storage system will be added to enhance flexibility and support grid stability.
In a related development, HSE and the Municipality of Zagorje ob Savi have signed an agreement to build a 1.4 MW solar power plant on the site of a former non-hazardous waste landfill at the Zagorje quarry. Construction is expected to begin following the approval of necessary permits and should be completed within a year.
