Gen Energija has selected the US-based engineering firm Rizzo International to conduct a probabilistic seismic risk assessment for both the existing Krsko nuclear power plant and the planned second unit. The study is expected to take approximately 15 months and will cost just over €2.1 million, excluding VAT.
The project will also involve several subcontractors, including two from Slovenia: the Geological Survey of Slovenia and the sole proprietorship Geoloska ekspertiza Igor Riznar. Rizzo’s initial bid in the first negotiation round was €2.58 million, with a lower price agreed in the second round ultimately securing the contract.
The seismic risk analysis is a key element of the technical documentation required for further project development. Its findings will inform preparations ahead of the final investment decision on the second unit, currently expected in 2028.
Alongside the technical studies, regulatory procedures are also progressing. A public consultation on launching the national spatial plan for the second Krsko unit was held in autumn. Government officials have confirmed that feedback from the consultation is still under review, with a decision on whether to proceed with drafting the spatial plan likely to be taken by mid-January.
