The Serbian Energy Ministry has announced intentions to increase annual gas imports from Azerbaijan to 1 billion cubic meters, a rise of over 2.5 times the current agreement of 400 million cubic meters.
Negotiations for new supply contracts are expected to begin soon, as existing agreements run through 2026 with an annual cap of 400 million cubic meters.
A crucial factor enabling this expansion is a new interconnector with North Macedonia, which will connect Serbia to the Southern Gas Corridor via the TANAP and TAP pipelines. Currently, Azerbaijani gas enters Serbia only through Bulgaria, while most of Serbia’s supply arrives via the Balkan Stream pipeline.
Expanding Azerbaijani gas imports supports Serbia’s strategy to reduce dependence on a single supplier and secure stable gas volumes for upcoming gas-fired power plants.
Further strengthening this cooperation, Serbia plans to sign a memorandum with Azerbaijan for constructing a gas-fired power plant near Niš, a key component of Serbia’s latest Energy Development Strategy and Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan.
