Serbia: Construction begins on new 400 kV transmission line connecting Obrenovac and Bajina Bašta

Construction has officially started on a new 400 kV dual-circuit transmission line linking Obrenovac to Bajina Bašta, marking a major advancement in Serbia’s energy infrastructure. This project, initiated near the Obrenovac substation, is part of the wider Trans-Balkan Corridor and aims to improve regional electricity transmission capacity and system stability.

Stretching over 109 kilometers, this high-voltage line represents the third phase of the Trans-Balkan Corridor—one of the region’s most strategically significant energy initiatives. The new line will replace the existing 220 kV infrastructure in western Serbia, enhancing both capacity and reliability of the national grid.

A key benefit of the project is its support for the planned Bistrica pump-storage hydropower plant, which is expected to play a crucial role in balancing Serbia’s electricity system amid growing renewable energy integration. The total investment for this segment is estimated at approximately 100 million euros. Funding sources include a 64.5 million euro loan from the German development bank KfW, 21 million euros in grants from the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF), and additional contributions from Serbia’s transmission system operator EMS.

Following an international tender, the construction contract was awarded to local company Kodar Energomontaža. Completion is scheduled for 2027.
