In the evening hours of 24 January, a landslide occurred at Kolubara coal mining basin. The accident caused no injuries, however electricity production was briefly disrupted.

Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Djedovic said that an excavator had to stop work after a track was partially buried in the landslide. She said that coal production at Kolubara mines has fallen by 30 % in the last two weeks and the trend is expected to continue following the accident.

Representatives of state-owned power utility EPS said that coal supply to its thermal power plants has not been interrupted and the accident will have no long-term effect on electricity production.

After a series of accident at Kolubara mining basin in late 2021 and early 2022, Serbian coal-based electricity generation has been significantly reduced due to the lack of coal supply, which forced EPS to import expensive electricity and incur huge losses in 2022.

Kolubara mining basin produces about 70 % of coal in Serbia, which is used in TPPs Nikola Tesla A and B.
