The Romanian Ministry of Energy has released the updated version of the 2025-2035 Energy Strategy, with a long-term outlook extending to 2050, following input from civil society, academia and industry stakeholders. The next steps towards adoption include the initiation of the environmental assessment procedure for plans and programs, followed by inter-institutional approval and final adoption by Government decision.

Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja emphasized that regional developments, the climate crisis, and economic conditions present both challenges and opportunities for Romania, particularly in the energy sector. He noted that the Energy Strategy is focused on investments that will align the energy sector with Romania’s future needs, ensuring the country has safe, affordable, and clean energy.

The strategy envisions developing Romania’s energy sector in a manner that ensures security, sustainability, economic growth, and accessibility. It aims to accelerate the green transition and enhance energy security by balancing affordable prices with economic competitiveness, transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable or low-carbon energy sources, expanding storage capacities, improving energy efficiency, diversifying local energy sources, strengthening transmission and distribution networks, increasing internal consumption efficiently, making networks more flexible, and fostering a competitive, consumer-focused energy market.
