Romania has adopted its first comprehensive energy strategy in 17 years, the Ministry of Energy announced. The “Energy Strategy of Romania 2025-2035, with projections up to 2050” outlines the future direction for the country’s energy sector, focusing on three key objectives: security, accessibility, and sustainability. The strategy is the product of a year-long effort involving ministry experts, companies, public institutions, civil society, and members of the Honorary Council for Energy. Notably, external consultants were not involved in the drafting process for the first time.
The strategy is structured around six core pillars:
- Energy security
- Low-carbon energy
- Energy efficiency
- Physical access to energy for all consumers, financial affordability and economic competitiveness
- Efficient energy markets
- Digitalization, smart grid development and cybersecurity
Guided by principles such as prioritizing supply security, fostering a circular economy, and achieving climate neutrality by 2050, the strategy lays out Romania’s roadmap for energy development.
A key focus of the document is ensuring Romania’s energy security, which includes supporting neighboring Moldova. Minister Sebastian Burduja described the strategy as Romania’s vision for a secure, competitive, and clean energy future. He emphasized that Romania is at a critical juncture, grappling with major market fluctuations, geopolitical instability, and economic challenges.
To address these issues, the strategy outlines an ambitious plan that includes reducing energy imports by leveraging domestic resources, investing heavily in energy production, and upgrading transmission and distribution networks. Additionally, the plan calls for local production of energy equipment, digitalization and the adoption of cutting-edge technologies—all aimed at creating an energy sector that is secure, affordable, and environmentally friendly.
