Romania sees surge in natural gas imports in early 2025, but long-term decline expected

According to data released by the National Institute for Statistics (INS), Romania imported 1.066 million tons of oil equivalent (toe) of natural gas in the first five months of 2025. This represents an increase of 61 percent, or 403,700 toe, compared to the same period in 2024. During the same time frame, domestic natural gas production reached 3.151 million toe, marking a slight decrease of 1.7 percent (54,500 toe) year-on-year.

Estimates from the National Strategy and Forecasting Commission (CNSP) suggest that domestic natural gas production will grow at an average annual rate of 1.7 percent through 2027. In its latest Energy Balance Forecast, CNSP projects natural gas production to reach 7.79 million toe in 2025 (up 1.5 percent), 7.907 million toe in 2026 (up 1.5 percent), and 8.176 million toe in 2027 (up 3.4 percent).

On the import side, a downward trend is expected, especially by 2027, when imports are projected to decrease by 6 percent. This reduction is attributed to increased domestic production from new capacity coming online, as well as sustained gas transit to foreign markets.

CNSP forecasts natural gas imports of 2.211 million toe in 2025 (down 7.6 percent), 2.15 million toe in 2026 (down 2.7 percent), and 2.022 million toe in 2027 (down 6 percent).
