By the end of May 2025, Romania recorded 228,302 prosumers—electricity users who generate power through solar panels and feed surplus energy into the national grid—according to data from the Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE). Their combined installed capacity reached 2,726 MW.

Over the past year, the number of prosumers increased by 90,902, up from 137,400 in May 2024, representing a 66% year-on-year growth. Installed capacity also rose significantly, by 946 MW, marking a 53% increase compared to the previous year’s 1,780 MW.

In May alone, around 9,000 new prosumers were added. However, this rapid expansion is expected to slow down following the government’s suspension of its grant program for residential solar installations.

Private individuals make up the majority of prosumers, with around 202,000 users, while legal entities account for approximately 26,000.

Regionally, Ilfov county leads with nearly 15,400 prosumers, followed by Timis with over 11,000, and Bihor with about 9,400.
