Romania: OMV Petrom commissions €45m sulfur recovery unit at Petrobrazi Refinery

OMV Petrom has commissioned a major new processing facility at its Petrobrazi refinery, strengthening both environmental performance and operational flexibility at one of Romania’s most important fuel production sites. The newly completed sulfur recovery unit, representing an investment of €45 million, is now fully operational.

The installation is designed to process acid gas generated during fuel production, enabling the refinery to operate more efficiently while reducing emissions. By adding this capability, Petrobrazi can handle a wider range of crude oil grades, increasing flexibility amid shifting supply conditions.

Development of the unit began in 2023, and it represents the second sulfur recovery facility at the refinery. The sulfur produced through the process is not treated as waste, but rather as a valuable by-product used in industries such as fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, detergents and other chemical products.

Petrobrazi has been subject to continuous modernization for nearly two decades. Since 2005, OMV Petrom has invested over €2 billion to upgrade the refinery, progressively improving efficiency, safety and environmental standards.

Looking ahead, OMV Petrom plans to accelerate its transition toward lower-carbon fuels at Petrobrazi. The company has announced additional investments of around €750 million to develop new sustainable fuel production units, with commissioning targeted for 2028.
