Romanian Competition Council announced that it has authorized the transaction through which the electricity producer Nuclearelectrica, which operates the country’s sole nuclear power plant Cernavoda, has acquired the uranium processing plant from the National Uranium Company (CNU).
CNU went bankrupt after Nuclearelectrica refused to pay a higher price for the uranium powder and instead opted to import raw materials from Canada. The processing plant was built for processing uranium concentrate, thus ensuring the necessary raw material for Nuclearelectrica’s subsidiary FCN Pitesti, which then produces nuclear fuel for Cernavoda’s two reactors.
The processing plant meets all operating conditions, it is in strict compliance with national and EU legislation, as well as international bodies – International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and EURATOM Supply Agency.
