Romania: Installed electricity capacity surpasses 19.6 GW, driven by solar growth

According to Romania’s electricity transmission system operator Transelectrica, the country’s installed electricity generation capacity reached 19.6 GW on 1 September 2025, reflecting an increase of just over 1 GW since the start of the year. These figures do not include contributions from prosumers.

The growth has been driven primarily by solar energy, with 925 MW of new solar projects connected to the grid. This marks a significant turnaround after years of declining generation capacity in Romania’s national energy system.

The trend is seen as a positive development for the country’s energy sector. Continued investment could reduce Romania’s reliance on energy imports, lower consumer costs, and make 2025 the most successful year for new power plant commissioning since 1992.
