Romanian electricity producer Hidroelectrica has signed a 7.8 million euro contract with Waldevar Energy for the installation of a floating solar power plant at the Nufarul reservoir in Olt County. The project follows a 14-month timeline, starting with a four-month design phase and followed by ten months of construction. The pilot plant will use high-efficiency 620 W solar modules paired with 100 kW inverters, offering a total panel capacity of 10 MW and an anticipated annual generation of approximately 13.4 GWh.
Hidroelectrica’s CEO, Karoly Borbely, described the project as a significant innovation that expands the company’s energy portfolio, praising the efforts of internal teams who contributed to its development.
From Waldevar Energy’s perspective, this floating solar pilot is currently the largest of its kind in the European Union and demonstrates a successful integration of hydropower infrastructure with photovoltaic technology. CEO Alessandro Amato emphasized that the company will employ advanced solutions to optimize performance, strengthening its position as a leader in the floating photovoltaic sector.
This project marks Hidroelectrica’s first foray into floating solar systems. As Romania’s leading renewable energy producer, Hidroelectrica operates 188 hydropower plants with a combined capacity of 6.4 GW and owns the 108 MW Crucea wind farm.
