Romanian electricity producer Hidroelectrica has successfully completed the €11 million maintenance of Unit 1 at its Portile de Fier I hydropower plant. The project, which began in July 2023, involved full disassembly, component repairs at UCMH Resita, and reassembly by SSH Hidroserv.
This marks the first time since 2016 that all six units at the plant are operating simultaneously. Portile de Fier I, located on the Danube River at the Romania-Serbia border, is one of Europe’s largest hydropower plants, contributing 40 percent of Hidroelectrica’s total electricity production. Following refurbishment, its annual output is estimated at 5.24 terawatt-hours, representing around 10 percent of Romania’s national electricity generation.
