Romania, Drop in hydropower production by 20% in 11 months, to 12.9 TWh

The final consumption of electricity in Romania in the period from January to November 2022 amounted to 47.386 billion kWh, which is 7 percent less than in the same period in 2021, while the final consumption of electricity in the economy decreased by 6 percent, according to the data published on Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

Official statistics show that consumption for public lighting decreased by 4 percent, and household consumption by 9 percent.

The export of electricity amounted to 6.542 billion kWh – it increased by 1.198 billion kWh compared to the same period in 2021. Technological consumption in networks and substations decreased by 277.6 million kWh, to 4.577 billion kWh.

From January 1 to November 30, 2022, primary energy resources decreased by 0.4 percent, and electricity sources by 4 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

In the analyzed period, primary energy resources amounted to 30,584 million tons of oil equivalent (tons), which is 135,000 tons less on an annual basis, while domestic production amounted to 16,246 million tons (-3 percent), and imports to 14,338 million tons, (+3 percent).

In the first 11 months of 2022, electricity resources amounted to 58.506 billion kWh, which is 2.511 billion kWh less compared to the same period in 2021.

Production in thermal power plants amounted to 19.586 billion kWh (-2 percent). At the same time, the production of hydropower plants decreased by 20 percent to 12.879 billion kWh, while the production of nuclear power plants was lower by 2 percent and amounted to 10.065 billion kWh kWh.

The production of wind power plants in the period from January 1 to November 30, 2022, amounted to 6.403 billion kWh, which is 700 million kWh more than in the same period of the previous year. Solar energy production increased by 59.8 million kWh, to 1.722 billion kWh.
