Nuclearelectrica, the operator of Romania’s only nuclear power plant at Cernavoda, announced that Unit 2 was taken offline on 25 June in a controlled shutdown. The move was made to allow for further technical assessments and, if necessary, the implementation of corrective measures. The company stressed that all procedures are being conducted according to strict safety protocols and pose no risk to nuclear security, plant personnel, or the surrounding community.
Earlier that day, Unit 2 had resumed operations following a scheduled maintenance outage. The planned downtime included routine servicing and system checks, all of which were completed successfully.
Later on 25 June, smoke was detected—without visible flames—in the administrative area of the facility. Nuclearelectrica promptly located and resolved the issue, confirming that there was no danger related to the incident. Both nuclear reactors continued to function within normal parameters immediately afterward.
The Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant consists of two 700 MW units, which together account for approximately 20% of Romania’s total electricity generation.
