Romania’s Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE) has approved the construction of the Ialomita Nord wind farm, a major renewable energy project with a planned capacity of over 246 megawatts (MW). The initiative is being developed by Portuguese energy company Greenvolt through its Romanian subsidiary, Tandarei Solar.

Ialomita Nord is set to become one of the largest wind farms in the country and is among the first projects to receive support under Romania’s Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme. Introduced by the Ministry of Energy in 2023, the CfD mechanism offers a fixed electricity selling price for 15 years, protecting investors from market fluctuations and encouraging long-term development of renewable energy infrastructure.

With Romania currently operating around 3,100 MW of wind power capacity, the Ialomita Nord project will significantly boost the country’s renewable portfolio. It is expected to deliver affordable, low-carbon electricity while also contributing to regional economic development and attracting additional foreign investment.

Beyond increasing capacity, the wind farm signals Romania’s growing role in Europe’s green energy transition. It underscores the country’s commitment to climate goals and strengthens its position as an emerging hub for renewable energy in Southeastern Europe.
