Greece and Italy have advanced plans for their second electricity interconnection, GRITA2, following the inaugural meeting of the Steering and Governance Committee in Rome last week.

The two transmission system operators, ADMIE and Terna, have already made substantial progress. GRITA2 has completed feasibility studies and has been included in ENTSO-E’s Ten-Year Network Development Plan. The project has also been nominated for the EU’s second list of Projects of Common Interest (PCI), underlining its strategic role in cross-border energy integration.

Earlier this year, ADMIE and Terna signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the project. The new 1,000 MW bidirectional link will connect Thesprotia in Greece with Galatina, near Otranto in southern Italy, effectively tripling the current electricity exchange capacity between the two countries.

During the Rome meeting, officials set the immediate priority to finalize technical and commercial documentation for the initial seabed survey. The tender for this stage is scheduled to open in the first half of November, with contract awards expected by May 2026 and project completion targeted for December 2026.

In parallel, ADMIE and Terna plan to accelerate environmental permitting procedures and prepare a Joint Procurement Agreement by spring 2026. Once operational, GRITA2 will strengthen the regional electricity network, improve supply security, and support greater integration of renewable energy across Southeastern and Western Europe.
