The Turnu Magurele-Nikopol hydropower project is a significant step forward for regional energy cooperation between Romania and Bulgaria. By being included in the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility for Energy (CEF Energy) under the List of Renewable Energy Cross-border Projects (CB RES), the project highlights both countries’ commitment to sustainable energy and cross-border collaboration.

The planned two 400 MW hydropower plants aim to harness the Danube River’s potential, enhancing renewable energy generation while addressing environmental sustainability and local needs. The project’s inclusion in the CEF Energy list underscores its importance in achieving the EU’s broader energy and climate goals.

It’s notable that this project has been in discussion for decades, reflecting its complexity and the commitment required from both nations. Its advancement could significantly impact regional energy infrastructure and contribute to the EU’s renewable energy targets.
