Construction of a new gas pipeline connecting North Macedonia and Greece is set to begin early this spring. The project was awarded to Slovakian company Rapid Build after a tender process conducted by North Macedonia’s state energy company, Nomagas.

According to North Macedonian authorities, the pipeline is expected to be completed in 2027, slightly behind the March 2026 timeline initially set by Greek gas transmission system operator DESFA in its updated ten-year development plan for 2024-2033. The project was originally slated for completion in 2025, but delays arose after Nomagas re-launched the tender process in October due to unforeseen issues.

Rapid Build won the contract with a bid of 59.9 million euros, significantly lower than the original tender price of 83.6 million euros. The company has prior experience with major gas infrastructure projects in North Macedonia. The tender attracted four additional bids, including two from Italian contractors and one each from companies in Serbia and Turkey. Contracts are expected to be signed by the end of January, pending approval from the European Investment Bank.
