Representatives from the Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH), three cantons, and the Brčko District have signed a memorandum of understanding to move forward with the Western Gas Interconnection project, linking Bosnia and Herzegovina to Croatia’s natural gas network.
The new pipeline will trace a route from Lika Jesenica through Rakovica and Tržač, reaching Bosanska Krupa in the Una-Sana Canton. From there, it will extend toward the Posavina and Tuzla Cantons, as well as the Brčko District, establishing critical infrastructure for regional energy integration.
FBiH Minister of Energy, Industry and Mining, Vedran Lakić, emphasized that natural gas must become the Federation’s second major energy source. After years of stagnation in gas infrastructure investment, the government is now laying the groundwork for institutional development and launching projects for western, northern, and southern interconnections.
The Western Gas Interconnection will support diversification of gas supply by enabling access to the LNG terminal on Croatia’s Krk Island. This is a strategic move to reduce Bosnia and Herzegovina’s dependence on Russian gas delivered via the TurkStream pipeline, and a significant step toward energy security and sustainability.
