North Macedonia is preparing to raise the maximum capacity for rooftop solar installations to 10 kW for households and 70 kW for businesses, up from the current limits of 6 kW and 40 kW. The draft legislation also introduces strict timelines for permitting and grid connection.
Under the proposal, authorities will be required to issue permits for systems up to 100 kW within one month of receiving an application. This deadline applies to both individual prosumers and collective energy communities. For grid connections, the distribution operator will have one month from confirming complete documentation to connect the installation.
If connecting at the requested location is not possible, the operator must inform the applicant in writing within 15 days and offer an alternative connection point. The new measures are designed to speed up the rollout of rooftop solar and boost North Macedonia’s renewable energy development.
