Five potential investors have submitted bids in response to a tender issued by North Macedonia’s state-owned natural gas transmission company, Nomagas, for the construction of its section of the natural gas interconnector with Greece. The project, valued at 83.7 million euros, is a key step in enhancing the country’s energy infrastructure.

The submitted bids come from two Italian companies, one Turkish company, one Serbian company, and a local firm. Nomagas plans to choose the winning bidder by the end of 2024, with the goal of starting construction in the spring of 2025.

This tender process follows a previous attempt in November 2023, which had to be repeated due to a technical issue despite attracting five bids. The current project entails the construction of a 67-kilometer-long gas pipeline along with the necessary infrastructure. According to the tender documents, the project is expected to be completed within 34 months from the contract signing.

The project is being funded through loans from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), along with an investment grant from the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF). This initiative is part of broader efforts to improve energy connectivity and security in the region.
