The electricity supply landscape in North Macedonia has entered a critical phase as the government declares a nationwide crisis due to disruptions in fuel procurement from Greece. This decision, approved by the government following recommendations from the national crisis management coordination body, highlights vulnerabilities within the country’s energy sector amid regional instability.
At the core of this situation is an inability among local electricity producers to secure sufficient fuel oil, crucial for maintaining generation levels. The unrest in Greece has impeded fuel deliveries, prompting immediate governmental action aimed at stabilizing energy production and distribution across the nation. Effective within seven days, this emergency declaration seeks to address these pressing challenges.
As part of its response strategy, North Macedonia’s electricity distribution operator will gain access to state reserves of fuel without charge. This measure aims not only to ensure continuity in power generation but also to alleviate potential stress on an already strained electrical system. The state-owned producer ESM had previously indicated that ongoing protests were complicating their operational logistics regarding essential fuel supplies.
The Ministry of Energy reports that there are currently over 10,000 tons of fuel oil held in national strategic reserves. These stocks are set to be utilized promptly as authorities work diligently to mitigate risks associated with electricity supply interruptions and maintain overall system reliability. Delays in coal deliveries further exacerbate existing challenges faced by producers during this crisis period.
