North Macedonia’s electricity market operator MEMO launched the national Register of Guarantees of Origin in April and quickly expanded its use, issuing 107,666 certificates in the first two months of operation.

The first renewable energy guarantees were awarded on 26 May to state-owned utility ESM for production from its hydropower plants. Activity picked up momentum soon after, with 56,620 guarantees issued in June for hydropower facilities and 51,046 in July for solar plants. More companies are now joining the register, helping build a more transparent and modern electricity market.

MEMO is aligning the system with both national and EU regulations to ensure a reliable, standardized process for issuing, transferring, and activating Guarantees of Origin. These electronic certificates allow consumers to confirm that a certain share or amount of their electricity consumption comes from renewable sources.
