North Macedonia’s state-owned power company ESM has partnered with Danish wind technology firm Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy to advance the next phase of the Bogdanci wind farm project. This expansion involves an investment of 37.6 million euros and will add four wind turbines, each with a capacity of 3.4 MW, increasing the wind farm’s total generating capacity from 36.8 MW to 50 MW.
The project is backed by a combination of funding sources. The German development bank KfW is providing a loan of 25.7 million euros, while the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) is contributing 8.9 million euros in grants. ESM will finance the remaining 3 million euros. Construction is expected to take just over a year, with turbine installation scheduled to begin in the summer of 2027. Full operations are anticipated shortly after installation is complete.
Situated in southern North Macedonia, the Bogdanci wind farm has been contributing to the country’s renewable energy supply since its commissioning in July 2015. The expansion represents a key milestone in North Macedonia’s efforts to transition to clean energy and strengthens its ability to meet domestic electricity needs through sustainable generation.
