North Macedonia: Energy use in July 2025: Electricity production falls, thermal output rises, hydropower drops

In July 2025, total electricity consumption in North Macedonia reached 421,489 MWh, while natural gas consumption stood at 25.6 million cubic meters. Coal consumption amounted to 357,665 tons, and petroleum product use totaled 112,946 tons. According to the State Statistical Office, all electricity consumed during the month was covered by domestic production, and 99.9 percent of coal consumption was directed toward electricity generation.

Gross electricity production amounted to 458,478 MWh, representing a 5.2 percent decline compared to July 2024. Thermal power plants generated 183,891 MWh, accounting for 40.1 percent of total output, which was a 23.2 percent increase year-on-year. Hydropower plants produced 80,293 MWh, or 17.5 percent of the total, marking a 43.8 percent drop. Combined heat and power (CHP) plants contributed 119,020 MWh, or 26 percent of production, down 16.1 percent compared to last year. Wind farms delivered 24,006 MWh, representing 5.24 percent of output.

Electricity production from biogas plants reached 3,606 MWh, while solar power plants generated 47,661 MWh, accounting for 10.4 percent of the country’s electricity in July.

Electricity imports stood at 114,930 MWh, slightly lower than the 126,813 MWh recorded in July 2024. Exports reached 151,919 MWh, compared to 164,135 MWh in the same month last year.
