Montenegro to offer state-backed premiums for 250 MW solar capacity in upcoming renewable energy auction

Montenegro plans to offer state-supported market premiums for 250 MW of solar power in its upcoming renewable energy auction. The government has established the necessary regulations to invite bids for solar projects with a minimum capacity of 400 kW. Successful bidders will be those who propose the lowest strike price, which is capped at 65 euros per MWh. Winners will be granted a 12-year Contract for Difference (CfD), ensuring they receive the agreed premium in addition to market revenues.

This auction is part of Montenegro’s commitments to the European Union and marks the first in a series aimed at adding a total of 400 MW of renewable capacity, including both solar and wind projects.

The solar auction is set for 250 MW but includes a flexibility clause that allows for expansion by up to 20 percent (an additional 50 MW) to accommodate bids that are closely ranked or partially overlapping. If applications exceed this buffer, premiums will only be applied up to the established capacity limit.
