According to Milutin Djukanovic, the Chairman of the Board of Directors at Montenegrin state-owned power utility EPCG, the company is preparing to launch a tender for battery energy storage systems (BESS) with a total capacity of 240 MWh. The systems will be installed across two locations.

Originally scheduled for January, the tender will now be launched in the coming days. EPCG introduced the project in September, outlining several potential sites for the battery storage systems. These include a 60 MWh system at the Perucica hydropower plant, two 60 MWh systems at the company’s steel mill in Niksic, and another 60 MWh system at the Pljevlja thermal power plant, among other sites.

Currently, EPCG has a total installed generation capacity of 874 MW. Its two largest hydropower plants, Perucica and Piva, account for 649 MW of this capacity, while the country’s only thermal power plant, Pljevlja, provides 225 MW. In addition to these major facilities, EPCG operates several small hydropower plants and is actively working on developing wind and solar energy projects to diversify its renewable energy portfolio.
