Montenegro: EPCG faces €70 million challenge in 2025 amid thermal power plant shutdown

The Electricity Company of Montenegro (EPCG) faces a significant challenge in 2025, as it will need to import electricity at an estimated cost of 70 million euros due to the expected eight-month shutdown of the “Pljevlja” thermal power plant for environmental reconstruction. This shutdown will reduce the plant’s energy production capacity by 40%, which poses a major issue for EPCG, as they will not be able to source coal from the associated mine during this period, as the mine will not deliver any coal while the plant undergoes reconstruction.

Despite these challenges, EPCG is projected to end 2024 with a positive financial result, and they are optimistic about finding a solution to ensure the mine’s operation will continue without disruption. The company is actively seeking arrangements to mitigate the impact of the coal shortage and avoid jeopardizing the mine’s functioning during this critical period.
