Montenegro: EPA clears two Unipan Green solar projects without full environmental assessment

Montenegro’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has decided that Unipan Green, a local company, will not need to conduct an environmental impact assessment for two planned solar power projects located south of Podgorica.

The first project will have an installed capacity of 30 MW and will cover about 294,000 square meters on the site of the former Kombinat Aluminijuma Podgorica (KAP), now operating under Uniprom KAP. The second solar facility, with a capacity of 33.75 MW, will occupy around 242,400 square meters, also within the boundaries of the old aluminium plant.

Unipan Green is managed by Veselin Pejovic, the owner of Uniprom, which purchased KAP from the Montenegrin Government in 2014. The two solar projects form part of a wider initiative to redevelop and repurpose the extensive industrial land previously used by the smelter.

According to the EPA, Uniprom’s holdings within the former KAP complex cover nearly 2 million square meters. The decision to waive the requirement for a formal environmental impact assessment indicates that the expected environmental effects are minimal, allowing Unipan Green to advance with project development more quickly.
