Rosatom Mechanical Engineering, the machine-building arm of Russian state-owned nuclear corporation Rosatom, has successfully completed a comprehensive audit conducted by the Paks II project company and the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (OAH). The audit confirmed that the company meets all technical and regulatory requirements, allowing it to supply steam-generating nuclear equipment for Hungary’s Paks II nuclear expansion.

Experts from Paks II and Hungarian nuclear regulators jointly conducted the inspection and found no deficiencies. With this certification, Rosatom Mechanical Engineering is authorized to manufacture and deliver nuclear steam-generating systems for units 5 and 6 of the Paks nuclear power plant.

Rosatom is currently producing VVER-1200 reactors for the project. Work on metallurgical blanks for the reactor vessel of unit 5 started in 2024, followed by unit 6 in 2025, with production of internal reactor components for unit 5 also beginning in 2025. All participating plants had previously secured the required nuclear certifications and licenses.

The company initially underwent an audit in 2018, establishing the foundation for its role in the project. The Paks II expansion is significant as the first EU nuclear project to utilize Russian VVER-1200 technology. The project is based on a bilateral agreement signed between Hungary and Russia in January 2014, and in August 2022, Hungarian regulators granted the construction license, confirming compliance with both Hungarian and EU nuclear safety standards.
