The Hungarian Ministry of Energy has recently released an impact study of the country’s National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) for public consultation. Hungary prepared a draft of its NECP in the summer of 2023 and plans to submit the final version in the autumn of 2024, following feedback from the European Commission.
The plan aims to enhance Hungary’s energy sovereignty and security of supply while maintaining the benefits of the regulated utility price scheme for households and advancing the green transition. According to the NECP, Hungary intends to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% from 1990 levels by 2030. The plan also targets a reduction in energy consumption to 750 PJ, down from a previous target of 785 PJ, and aims to increase the share of renewables in the energy mix to 29%.
The public is invited to provide input on the impact study until September 22.
