The Krško Nuclear Power Plant, which otherwise has an unlimited operating permit, must, under current Slovenian legislation, undergo an extensive periodic safety review every ten years. The first such review was completed in 2003, and the second in 2013.

The third (PSR3) has also been completed. It took place under Slovenian legislation and the guidelines of the International Atomic Energy Agency and covered the areas of the plant, safety analyses, operation, and feedback on operating experience, management, environment, radiation protection, and security. For the review of security, which took place in parallel, the Slovenian Nuclear Safety Administration (SNSA) issued a decision in August this year; the action plan is already being implemented. For the remaining, more extensive part of the review, the SNSA issued a decision on Monday, 4 December 2023, confirming the periodic safety review report which consists of two documents: The 3rd NEK Periodic Safety Review – Summary Status and Global Assessment of Plant Status and Implementation Action Plan.

With this, Krško fulfils the condition for extending the validity of the plant’s operating permit. However, it must complete the plan of changes and improvements by the beginning of December 2028 at the latest and report to the SNSA on the progress of each half year.

By obtaining the environmental consent for extending the power plant operation until 2043, which was issued by the competent ministry at the beginning of the year, and completing the Safety Upgrade Program, with this decision, Krško fulfilled the last administrative request for the extension of the plant operation.
