E.ON Hungaria, a subsidiary of the German energy giant E.ON, is advancing its electricity network in Hungary to better accommodate weather-dependent renewable energy sources, particularly residential solar panels.
The upgrade initiative, launched in 2022, encompasses over 20,000 projects with a budget of approximately €289 million. This program is financed equally by the EU Recovery and Resilience Fund and E.ON Hungaria’s own resources.
The upgrades impact a significant portion of E.ON’s 88,000-kilometer network. Investments include €113.5 million in Northern Transdanubia, €75.5 million in Southern Transdanubia, and around €101 million in Budapest and Pest County. The work involves constructing new substations and modernizing numerous existing ones.
To address rising energy demands, E.ON has built or upgraded 1,416 kilometers of low and medium voltage networks and introduced over 2,300 new or refurbished transformers. Additionally, thousands of digital and operational management enhancements have been implemented to boost supply security.
The investment aims to support both industrial energy needs and the growing demand in residential areas, facilitating the addition of new solar power plants and small-scale household generators. The network upgrades will enhance the capacity by 1,047 MW, integrating more renewable energy sources into E.ON’s infrastructure.
