The current regulations were adopted back in 2009 and was based on the RES technology of the time, which is now considered obsolete.
Next summer, when new regulations will be implemented, new, stricter rules for the eligibility of renewable energy project applications is expected to lead to the disqualification of thousands of proposed projects.
The total capacity represented by older and newer RES project applications, along with producer certificates and production licenses, currently exceeds 100 GW, which is completely unrealistic for the size of the Greek market. This figure will be significantly reduced when the new rules, including new spatial terms and a series of restrictions related to environmental protection rules, come into force.
The plan is that old applications, which are currently occupying available capacities, could be offered to RES projects with greater probability of realization.
