Greece, Electricity consumption decreased by 13.24 % in January 2023

According to data published by Greek electricity transmission system operator ADMIE, electricity consumption decreased by 13.24 % in January 2023 compared to the same month last year, thus making it a seventh successive month in which the consumption dropped on an annual level.

January’s reduction ranks as the second-biggest during the seven successive months of decline and is one of the biggest ever recorded in Greece.

Households registered the biggest drop in electricity consumption in January – 15 % compared to January 2022, while heavy industry also reduced its consumption by 7.8 % year-on- year .

Electricity consumption in January 2023 amounted to 4,235 GWh compared to 4,881 GWh in January 2022. The drop in electricity demand had a consequence of electricity generation reduction of 25.75 % in January, year-on-year.

Renewables and hydropower dominated the country’s energy mix in January 2023 with a 53.6 % share. Natural gas and lignite-fired electricity generation had a combined 30.5 % share.
