According to data published by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), in 2020, consumption of petroleum products fell by 8.1 % year-on-year in Greece, from 7.29 million tons to 6.69 million tons, mostly due to lockdown measures introduced to curb the coronavirus pandemic.
Surprisingly, the consumption of super unleaded petrol (98/100 octane) increased by 34.8 %, to 331,664 liters from 246,044 liters in 2019, which is attributed to the growing number of newer car models on Greek roads. At the same time, consumption of regular unleaded petrol fell by 23 %, from just over 2 million tons in 2019 to 1.57 million tons in 2020.
Consumption of diesel declined by 6.5 %, from 2.73 million tons in 2019 to 2.55 million tons in 2020.
Heating fuel demand also increased in 2020 – by 15.2 %, to 1.25 million tons from 1.08 million tons in 2019. This increase in consumption was attributed to lower prices.
