The natural gas transmission system operators of Greece (DESFA) and Bulgaria (Bulgartransgaz) have announced a joint call for interest to assess the hydrogen market in both countries. This initiative is part of a broader strategic vision aimed at developing a robust hydrogen market that supports energy security, economic growth, and environmental sustainability.

Interested parties are invited to submit non-binding expressions of interest to either operator by November 30, 2024. The call will help identify anticipated needs for hydrogen transmission capacity, potential production sites, and delivery points for end users. The data gathered will aid in the planning and construction of the necessary hydrogen transport infrastructure in Greece and Bulgaria.

Both DESFA and Bulgartransgaz are already planning hydrogen-dedicated infrastructure, with two hydrogen projects included in the European Commission’s 1st Project of Common Interest (PCI) and Project of Mutual Interest (PMI) lists. This recognition underscores the strategic importance of these projects in developing a pan-European hydrogen infrastructure, supporting EU climate goals, and enhancing energy security through the Southeastern European Hydrogen Corridor.
