Fluctuations in European solar and wind energy: July 14 production surges and July 21 forecasts predict mixed trends

During the week of July 14, solar photovoltaic energy production rose compared to the previous week in several key European electricity markets. The increase ranged from 5.3% in Germany to 10% in Portugal. Spain continued its upward trend for the second consecutive week, with a 7.0% increase. Additionally, Spain set a historic record on July 16 by generating 237 GWh of solar photovoltaic energy. Two days earlier, on July 14, Portugal reached a new all-time high for solar photovoltaic energy production on a July day, producing 30 GWh. Conversely, the French and Italian markets saw declines, dropping by 18% and 0.3%, respectively.

For the week of July 21, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predicts a decline in solar photovoltaic energy production in the German, Spanish, and Italian markets.

In the same week of July 14, wind energy production increased in some major European markets compared to the previous week. Portugal and Spain reversed earlier declines, rising by 75% and 4.8%, respectively. France experienced a fifth consecutive week of growth in wind energy, with a 22% increase. However, wind production fell in Italy and Germany, with a 27% drop in Italy reversing the prior week’s gains, and a 21% decrease marking the third consecutive weekly decline in Germany.

For the week of July 21, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting anticipates wind energy production will rise in Germany and Spain but fall in France, Portugal, and Italy, AleaSoft reports.
