The consequence of the decision not to build a new unit of thermal power plant Tuzla will be a drastic drop in electricity production and electricity imports at market prices because renewable energy sources in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina cannot replace thermal power plants.
– With the old dilapidated blocks, if nothing were to happen and when they shut down in six or seven years because they cannot be reconstructed, we will decarbonize before Germany and Poland and in 2030 we will be carbon neutral. Then Elektroprivreda BiH will be in a situation where it will be left without a huge amount of energy, and then we will have to import electricity because renewable sources cannot so easily compensate for what is produced by thermal power plants – said Amer Jerlagić, an energy expert.
What is the energy picture of Bosnia and Herzegovina, more precisely the Federation of BiH in the light of thermal power plants, is best shown by the fact that at the moment the ratio of electricity production from coal in relation to renewable energy sources is 82 to 18 percent.
Apart from Jerlagić, numerous other experts also pointed out that at the moment there is not even a theoretical chance to replace the production of electricity from thermal power plants with renewable energy sources.
